A PLACE OF MEETING, A CENTER FOR RENEWAL
Circular is a place, a church, and people committed to living and worshiping with joy, simplicity, and caring. We care for the hidden wholeness in each other; we care for justice and kindness in our society; we care about thinking with open minds and devoted hearts; and we care about saving the beauty and integrity of the environment for future generations. Because we care deeply about these things, we practice what we preach in our personal lives as well as in our church’s programs. Being an Open and Affirming Church, we welcome people of different sexual orientations, socio-economic status, racial and ethnic backgrounds, and we value the differences among us as signs of the Creator’s amazing polyphony.
Our faith is rooted in Jesus Christ, whom we endeavor to follow in the radical way of progressive Christianity. That is, we believe the Bible is truthful but not literal, that God is a living Presence but not a dominating white man in the sky, that Jesus is a person of the Spirit and of saving wisdom but not a sacrifice to an offended God. We commit ourselves to equal and utmost respect of persons, joyful worship, theological discipline and discovery, social justice and dignity, and collegial leadership.
And we invite you to join us in this exciting spiritual pathway!
On January 29, 2012, Circular Church called its new Senior Minister: the Rev. Dr. Jeremy Rutledge. After a weekend of meet-and-greets, conversations, and worship, over 200 Circular members voted unanimously to affirm the call. Jeremy will be joining Circular full-time in April 2012.

Sunday morning worship is at 11:00 a.m. in the Sanctuary at 150 Meeting Street.
Sunday Morning Worship. Our service uses a traditional format with choir and organ, preaching and the celebration of the sacraments. It begins with a gathering time of exchanging greetings and making announcements. The service proceeds through the drama of worship following what Matthew Fox called the four movements of Christian spirituality: via positiva, via negativa, via creativa, and via transformativa. These movements generate expressions of praise, the interior gaze of confession, a creative interpretation of life and discipleship for children (in a “Children's Welcome”) and adults (the Teaching), and re-dedication to serving the city and world. The service is “user-friendly.” Visitors are not singled out for attention but are welcomed at the door and in the fellowship hour after the service in the Hall behind the sanctuary.
Sundays at 9:45, Church School Classes are available for preschool through adult. Look under the youth and adult tabs for more information.
Summer Worship. From the first Sunday in June through Labor Day, the congregation gathers each Sunday at 10:15 for Summer Worship, enjoying a more relaxed atmosphere and sometimes using experimental worship forms. Church School is in summer recess.
Parking. Many of the lots close to the church are free for Circular people on Sunday mornings. You may use the Cumberland Street Parking Garage, entered off Cumberland between Meeting and Church Streets, where you should show your worship bulletin to the attendant when you leave. We also use the surface lot behind the bank on the corner of Meeting and Cumberland, next door to the church and the SCE&G lot across Meeting Street from our front door. Parking is free until 1:00 at these places.
Nursery. A state-of-the-art nursery in the front of Lance Hall (ground floor) is staffed by professional nursery workers and parent volunteers during worship services and church school. Children are carefully supervised and older children have stories, games, and snacks. School-age children normally stay with parents in church or have special announced programs following the Children’s Welcome in worship.
Accessibility. The sanctuary is fully accessible to wheel chairs and people with special needs via the ramp in the back of the building, starting close to the entrance from the parking lot. The second floor of Lance Hall and church school space is accessible by elevator. Hearing enhancement devices and large print bulletins/hymnals are available from the ushers before worship services.
